Living Green Cameroon Cyber Café

Information and Communication are very important factors for community development

and with the aid of internet many people are now able to access information and communicate with others as easy as never before. Statistics from the Ministry of Post Communication states that 95% of people living within developing community can’t afford a computer with a working internet and equally do not have the grown level knowledge to work on the internet or basic know how to operate a computer. This being a vital tool for community development, Living Green Cameroon saw the need to bring affordable and regular internet to the community for the benefit of all people. On the 05 Jan 2013 Living Green Cameroon lunch a Cyber Café Project after a 3 day meeting held the previous year, 04 Oct 2012 to 07 Oct 2012. The agenda was to set up a Cyber Café Project with a goal of providing the entire community with a Fast, regular, safe, and equal access to the internet with no age limit or discrimination with an objective to provide open training in computer/ internet skills and promote youth’s development. During this 3 day meetings L.G.C setup a plan of action, allocated the startup funds for the project and hence kick off a fundraising campaign which lasted till 05 Jan 2013 and subsequently setting up the cyber café. The project when operation on the 10th March 2013, with 16 computers and 7 trained volunteers for the project. The Living Green Cameroon Cyber Café now ongoing for 3 successful years and equally contributes greatly in driving socio-economic development in the community. The Cyber was renovated early January 2015, new computers added to a total of 25 including other facilities for the use of the general public of Bonabery-Douala and its environs. After attending a seminal organized by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MINPOSTEL) which lasted for 2 days, LGC organized an outreach programs from the 16th Feb, 2015 – 21st March, 2015 aimed to sensitize other cyber café owners/workers who are for profit making to also understand the need to provide quality service and adequate assistance to customers who have difficulties in browsing or accessing an internet working computer generally. Finally, Living Green Cameroon (LGC) links the cyber café to its other programs that benefit from the cyber café via its potential for a positive impact on the lives of children, women, young people and adults. The organization’s (LGC) staff and volunteers at the cyber Café project has becomes more skilled in working with children, women and youths as the cyber café provide space for free computer training and workshops for vulnerable persons in partnership with the Ministry of Social Affairs (MINAS).
